When it comes to Springfield IL, there are 2 celebrities: Abe Lincoln & the HORSESHOE! Springfield is home of the famous Horseshoe Trail.

So what is a horseshoe, you ask? It’s two thick slices of toasted Texas Toast, topped with your choice of meat, then covered with a heaping pile of crispy French fries and drenched with homemade cheese sauce! It’s doesn’t get much better than that!

This creation goes all the way back to 1928 at the Leland Hotel & was created by Chef Joe Schweska. The name “horseshoe” was derived from the shape of the cut of ham used in the original sandwich. The French fries represent the nails of the shoe, and the sizzle platter represents the hot anvil.

This culinary delight can be found at almost any Springfield eatery with a variety of creative options to choose from.

We’ll see you on the Horeshoe Trail!
